Making the Most of Relationships
With so many advances in recent years, our lives have been both enriched and set back by our continuing progress. One area that has suffered greatly for many individuals is in the area of relationships. With the advent of social networking, blurbs have taken the place of real conversations and staying in touch means a few choice words here and there. Real relationships take time and effort; continue reading for some ways you can make the most of the relationships in your life.
Effective Communication
Communication is something that requires both parties of a conversation to be fully engaged. While it is great to be able to drop a quick email to a friend or relative, your communication shouldn’t be limited to strictly electronic means. Take the time to speak with your significant other, friends, and family; keeping the lines of communication open will enrich and enhance your relationships, helping them to fully blossom.
Quality Time
Time is another big thing that is required of relationships. Taking time out of your busy schedule to get together with friends and loved ones shows that you are willing to make an effort to keep the relationship going. Don’t limit your relationships to just phone calls, get out there and spend time with others. Think of someone you haven’t spoken to in a while and make plans to get together with them; often people are afraid to bother others for the sake of companionship, so take the initiative and rekindle your relationships that have been put to the side.
Commitment
Relationships do require a certain level of commitment which will vary depending on the other party. Marriages obviously require a deep level of commitment; friendships will usually require less commitment, but a complete lack of commitment to a friend can sometimes mean the end of a friendship is on the horizon. Good friends can be counted on in tough times and should be able to expect the same of you.
Support
The ability to support others’ decisions is another quality of lasting relationships. It is good to help friends evaluate their decisions, but once they have been made it is time to support your friends and loved ones. Whether things go as planned or not, support is an essential aspect of relationships that cannot be underplayed.
Maintaining quality relationships isn’t always going to be easy, but by treating others with the same love and respect that you would expect of them is always the best policy. Quality relationships and friendships are hard to come by and will always require a certain degree of effort, but the end result is well worth it.
